We are so pleased to have the magnificent Paula Cheney back as a guest on the blog to show us how to make this phenomenal Steampunk Village!

Hi again, Paula here!  Super excited to share my Steampunk Village with you today.  The houses are made using the Tim Holtz Artful Dwellings die - but I'm going to take it a step further and make them 3-D.  I made a village like this at Christmas time but when January rolled around and the little village had to be packed up I was so sad to take it down.  So, todays alternative is for everyday use...no packing up (at least till December).  Enjoy!

(All instructions pictured left to right, top to bottom)
(1)Cut a variety of 6 x 6” papers from the back of the Tim Holtz French Industrial Paper Stash. Cut at least 4 of the 6 x 6" papers into random sized strips. Also cut 3 pieces of cardstock 6 x 8 1/2” (I am using Ranger Kraft cardstock) (2)Use a Collage Glue stick to adhere the strips to each of the 3 pieces of cardstock, making sure they butt up against each other but do not overlap. (3)Use a sewing machine to stitch between the papers or for you sewers out there, “stitch in the ditch”. (4)Use the Tim Holtz Artful Dwellings die, cut TWO of the cardstock pieces as well as two matching pieces of Grungeboard.  Note: there is one rounded top house piece in this die.  I used this as a door so I only needed to cut one of them.  Only the pointed top pieces were made into houses.(5)Use a Collage Glue stick to match up the pieces and glue them together.  Once glued, place under a heavy book for 30 minutes.  This will cement the paper and Grungeboard together. (6)Since we are making three little 3-D houses, we need sides and a roof for each.  Using the measurements below, cut 2 sides and 2 roof pieces for each house from Grungeboard.  Use a Sharpie to mark each piece accordingly.

Big house -
sides - 2 x 3"
roof - 3 x 2 1/2"

Tall house -
sides - 2 1/2 x 1 5/8"
roof - 2 x 3"

Small House -
sides - 2 1/4 x 1 5/8"
roof - 2 x 2 1/4"

(7)Cover each SIDE piece with the remaining cardstock (do not cover the roof pieces with paper).  Each house you create should have a front and back, 2 sides, and two roof pieces. (8)
Use 1/8" Wonder tape to put the house pieces together.  Way easier than liquid glue. (9)
If there are little pieces of red thread hanging, I just covered them with extra paper bits.

 (10) Time to embellish! One of the 6 x 6 papers has pictures of top hat men.  I found three that I could cut out for the front of the houses. (11) Then I gathered some Idea-ology bits to choose from. (12)I started adding all the bits and pieces to the houses.  So many choices that will look great with the French Industrial paper. I added a Ring Fastener door handle to the rounded piece, then used foam squares to add to the front of the big house. (13)I cut a 1/4" x 8" strip to cover the edge and cover the foam squares.  Again, I used 1/8" Wonder tape to adhere the paper to the edge of the door. (14)
Now for the roof, Cover each roof piece with Ranger Metal Foil Tape.  Cut the piece big enough so you can wrap around to the back.  Remember the roof pieces hang off the house a bit so you will be able to see underneath about a 1/4" on the sides and bottom. (15)Run each set of roof pieces through the Vagabond machine using a texture fade to create a pattern in the metal. There are so many patterns to choose from that I couldn't decide, so I made each roof different.  I went with the harlequin, honeycomb, and bingo. (16)I used Pitch Black Alcohol ink to color the metal with an Alcohol Ink Applicator and felt pad. (17 & 18)Once dry, I added several layers of Ginger over the Pitch Black, letting it dry between layers.  Love, love, love this effect.

(19)Add the roof to each house with (you guessed it), Wonder Tape. I love how the Honeycomb pattern turned out.  It looks almost like an old slate roof. (20 & 21) I added a Clock key to the big house roof before I put it on the house. (22)Then I had an idea.  Use the Riveted Metal texture fade to make metal patches for the houses!  I spotted one place on the texture fade that would give me the right size patch.  Then layered 3 pieces of Metal Tape and ran it through the Vagabond. (23)Cut them out, add some Alcohol ink and sand a bit to distress it and bring out the silver underneath.  A patch is made. (24)Peel off the backing paper and stick it right on the house where you like!  I think I could go a little crazy making metal patches. (25 & 26)The embellishments: Remnant Rub words + cash key. (27) Add philosophy tag, mini gears, game spinner, & ring fasteners!!

Final product shot ((drum roll please))...
Well, I hope you liked the Steampunk Village.  So many versions of the village can be made to suit your decor.  And really, why stop at three?
cheers!
