Summer Scrapbooking Series with May Flaum!

Hello there! May Flaum here with a new monthly series for the Simon Says Stamp blog! I'll be checking in sharing a new scrapbook layout, how-to, and sketch too. This month, I wanted to kick it off with Crate Paper's line The Pier which is perfect for beachfront crafting - or summer creations in general.

I knew I wanted to work with one of the chipboard frames, some 6x6 paper, and 12x12 paper from The Pier so I began the process of gathering, cropping, and setting up some base layers.

I love how the peaches and greens worked well with all that red rock in my background, and that my girls bright pink shirts still looked nice and not too, well, pink for the page.

Layering with 6x6 paper is so fun - I like to just position it so little bits and pieces peek out here and there. I also love to build a nice mat (as I have above) and stitch on it before adhering to my layout. This lets me play around with position and see what I really like.

Add in some die cuts, dimensional stickers, and a tag I painted with bundled sage and this layout is coming right together!

There is just one thing: I want to add some gold sparkle! So I added in number stickers, and I also sprinkled some gold UTEE in a few spots. For the UTEE I heated from underneath my page so that it left gold sprinkles - I love this effect! It is more dimensional and easier to control verses mist, but a squirt or two of mist would work as well.

Here is my finished page-
and here is a sketch in case you'd like to try a layout like this yourself!
Not a scrapbooker? Look at my sketch and notice that if you removed the 4x4 photo and instead did something with a feature stamp image you could build a cool card or tag.

Mondays with May: Inspired by Tim Holtz!

Greetings friends! It's May Flaum here, and this week I'm pulling out my Tim Holtz stash of supplies to create a 12x12 scrapbook layout!
It seems like so often my Tim Holtz stash gets used for cards, tags, and canvas creations but the truth is I really love how much fun many of his products are for scrapbooking! From the tissue to the rub-ons, letters to tags - I had a blast making this page. Here are some process shots so you can see how it all came together:
What to do with those tricky surfaces that won't stick? Just staple, use brads, or stitch!
I love painting these new Tim Holtz letters. So ornate and perfect for some Disney fun.
Now we're getting somewhere! As you see above, my letters were really blue. So I used some sand paper and scrubbed off a bit of color on my finished project.

Below, I'm using my tarnished  brass distress paint with my gears blueprint stamp to create some funky magic as an accent. You can also see I've stitched my photos to the tissue so I can be sure that they'll really stick.
For contrast and added detail, I also added in some number rub-ons. The great thing about these is that I'm able to rub without cutting out or worrying about parts I don't want to stick to attach themselves. They are super easy to use.
Some more glue, a bit of metal, and before you know it I had a finished page with lots of funky detail.

I also want to mention that I am absolutely in love with the new Shattered cardstock by Tim. It is the cardstock I used on this page, and I love the pre-aged look of it! This layout reminds me to scrapbook more often with Tim Holtz, and in fact it's inspired a pink project that you can find over on my blog today. That's not all you'll find either - I also have a special (limited time!) special offer up today too.

Mondays with May: Inspired by Amy Tangerine!

It is a bright and beautiful day, and what could make it better than spending some crafty time with Amy Tangerine? May Flaum reporting in for a happy crafting kind of Monday!

There is a lot to love from the great sticker books to the cute designs of her papers to the way that the products work beautifully with not just her own line, but past lines and other brands as well. I also love that I can scrapbook, make little daybooks, or make cards and other projects too. Today I'm going to share two projects made just for the Simon blog. First, let's get out our embroidery template!

I can't say enough good things about this product - it is so easy to punch the holes (and the kit comes with a needle and threads too!) and you can use it on all kinds of projects. I used mine to make a cute little notebook.
Amy's newest line also has a set of slick writers - which I love! these pens are bright beautiful colors and I love the pop of pink I added just coloring in the details on this little notebook.
Those sheer letter stickers are a favorite too - they look great layered and you can see patterns through them so they make things extra fun.

Now I'm feeling like getting kind of messy and making a special card. To do this I used a credit card and scraped a thick layer of paint in the middle of a chunk of patterned paper. Then I squished my sticker down in the middle and really pressed so the paint would ooze out of the edges. I love this look!
I then layered and stitched my trimmed piece of patterned paper onto cardstock that had been inked (with dylusions). Wanting even more layering, I layered it onto another chunk of white paper and misted with teal dylusions and water.

I am so in love with Amy's products - I just can't stop! You can find another stitched project over on my blog today, as well as a special discount code (limited time only!) for the Simon shop.

Mondays in May with May

While I'm not a big fan of the drink, the line Mint Julep by BasicGrey is by far one of my favorites from them in a long time! Even better? Unlike the cocktail version it is totally calorie free!
Welcome to another installment of Mondays with May! I'm excited to be here, and I'm ready to share
a new layout I created just for the Simon Says Stamp blog. First, here's a look at this layout as it was in-process.
Once I had chosen a photo to scrapbook, I knew I wanted to build a number of paper layers so I could utilize some of these fantastic patterns. One of the things I find so appealing about Mint Julep is that the patterns for the most part are smaller scale, and they are fairly muted colors. The pops of color come from the solid side of the papers and the embellishments, and I love how that compliments my photos so well.

For this page I used:
1x10 (blue paper), 6x10 (cream), and 7x3 (blue floral), as well as a 4x6 photo

Here is the finished page. You can see I added a doily, but everything else is from the BasicGrey line. To have a playful time and add a lot of small accents without overwhelming my photo and taking over the whole page, I confined myself to playing along the right side of the photo, and just a few accents below and to the left.
The finishing touch for my page was stamping with Hero Arts shadow ink in Navy. That touch of darkness added the contrast I needed, and I love the results!
This dear line from BasicGrey is wonderful for more than scrapbooking little girls though! With minty green, soft blues, and plenty of yellow it could be perfect for any spring, outdoors, or just because layout that you might want to make. Not a scrapbooker? That's ok too! I am loving it for cards - in fact today on my blog I'll be posting one if you'd like to see it.

Have a beautiful week- I wish you very happy crafting!

Mondays in May with May: WEEK ONE!

I can't begin to tell you how delighted I was when Kelly Purkey began teaming up with Simon Says Stamp - and now it isn't just stamps but she will also have papercrafting kits, embellishments, and more? Color me excited! It's May Flaum here, and I'm excited to be here blogging and sharing a new project that I created just for the Simon blog. Yes, I'll be sharing a layout I created with the April-May project kit and several of the exclusive Kelly Purkey products available in the shop as well.

Editors note: The June/July Project Kit was sneaked on the blog this weekend, check it out!!!!!!!
Supplies used:

I love how wonderfully these products work for my traditional 12x12 scrapbooking - and since the cards are 3x4 they work perfectly with my 4x6 photos that I often use!

My tip for working with the vellum is to either stitch it, adhere it where the adhesive won't show, staple it, or use brads to attach it. Personally I love how stitching looks on vellum, and I also love journaling on it!

How-to:
1. Color the woodgrain cards with distress inks and a foam blending tool
2. Assemble photo (4x6), cards, vellum (adhered under the photo), and patterned paper.
3. Stitch the vellum to the page at the top.
3. Stamp "So This Happened" as well as the arrow border
4. Add sequins, washi, and journaling to finish the page.
These simple alphabet stickers are the perfect size, and I love how the sequins are the perfect accent for so many of my projects!

If you'd like to see another layout made with these products, I'm sharing one today over at my blog. I don't know about you - but I don't think I'll be able to get enough of these Kelly Purkey exclusives for Simon Says Stamp any time soon!
